ICE Raids in Gainesville

There are reports of ICE raids at a construction site and a fast food restaurant on SW 13th Street in Gainesville this week.  So far there has been no positive confirmation, but that does not necessarily mean these reports are false.

Every reported incident of this kind causes well-grounded fear in immigrant communities, whatever an individual's status. I may be a citizen or a legal resident, but I will know people who are undocumented.

In times like these we all need to support one another.

Public statements by University of Florida president Kent Fuchs and petitions signed by faculty and staff as well as students demonstrate the solidarity of the campus community.

In his State of the City address yesterday, Mayor Lauren Poe quoted from the Welcoming Gainesville yard signs popping up across the city -- "No matter where you're from, we're glad you're our neighbor."

This is the spirit of Gainesville.

  1. I work in a Handicap Pre K in Gainesville. IK think one of our Dads was taken to Miami during this bust. We sent a letter to say his daughters are special needs. What can I do? They are twin girls with ASD. There is a older sister. Mom doesn't drive. They are in hiding. I need to do something to help. I could loss my job over this but can't just do nothing! They have come so far since we have worked with them. Please help me to be involved! G.
